Day 9:
Yippie- I surpassed my goals yesturday!!!! People know me. I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.
Today's goals:
Research: Finish Week of Soviet Cinema 1971
Research: Finish Week of French Cinema 1972
Research: Finish Weeks of French--Soviet Cinema press reviews
if time: Research: Finish Week of French Cinema pre-1955 context

Day 8: keepontrucking
Day 8:
Feeling more and more tired and stressed each day, I continue to research with the goal of writing really soon.
Goals today:
finish research on Week of French Cinema 1967
finish research on Week of Soviet Cinema 1967
finish research on Week of Soviet Cinema 1969 (short)
finish research on Week of Soviet Cinema 1970 (short)
I really hope I finish this today from 9-1; then I will only be left with 2 years to look through for Thursday and then I can finally begin writing the rest of this section on Friday. While I am disappointed research is taking so long, you gotta do what you gotta do so you can write, but also I can use this week's researching adventure as a gauge for how long it will take me to get through the rest of the research that is needed and create a realistic timeline/goal schedule for myself.

Day 7: the infirmary
Day 7:
I am rather sick today and shouldn't really come in.
I am rather sick today and shouldn't really come in.
But here is what I would say in morning group: I read, read, read yesterday. I got through 1.5 years (while all day Sunday I only got through 1 year!!) and had the wonderful intention of reading when I got back, but I was so drained from the 45 minute walk back to my place and had to deal with student loan problems (they're asking for money, yet I'm a full time student, I don't think so lady)- so alas nothing was done after camp yesterday. Though I have a sick tummy, I can still read, so I will be reading from home today for longer than 9-1.
_________
I got through 1.75 years, so yeah, that's a little better than the day before, which is a little better than the day before that!

Day 6: Cabin ReadingRainbow
Day 6:
So, I had the goals of reading through and reviewing all of a section's research over the weekend. Turns out that there's a lot of stuff to review and new documents to read, and missing documents to take note of for a wrap up research trip back to France in a few months. So unfortunately, today at WRITING camp I will be reading with the goal of reading as much as possible, but I will likely have to take both Monday and Tuesday to review research and organize/structure the section before I can actually begin to write it- I need a bird's eye view for this section, so everything needs to be read before writing.
_______________
Well I got through 1.5 years with just a few more. Interesting patterns are starting to emerge- this is awesome, but slow.

Day 5: Reflection by the camp pond: goal setting + how ya'll have inspired me
Week One Reflection: Goal Setting "Should Atlas shrug?"
No, do not shrug your shoulders Mr. Atlas as Ayn Rand suggests, even though she is my fav fav fav author- if I can do it, you too can do it. Mind you, the first and second days I set rather lofty goals for where I actually was with this section- I set the goal of "finishing this section" both Monday and Tuesday without realizing what that actually entailed. Diving into the section, like an Island of Dolphins, I realized what the contents of the water actually held and what I was capable of during my first few steps back into the oh so fun activity of dissertating. Like a Wrinkle in Time, I tesseracted and quickly arrived at a place where I could set realistic goals for the day-- Wednesday through Friday I accomplished everything thing I set in front of me for the day and some days just a bit more!!!!
How have I learned from my comrades? You were not throwing pearls to swine with me.
What has really seemed to help me was taking cues from others in the room and outlining my goals for the day in very specific ways. Besides seeing it all laid out in front of me to accomplish, like the introductory narrative text rolling off into the distance in Space Balls, it feel darn darn darn darn good to literally cross things off the list, with my mighty pen as the sword, I slashed the items off my list- like any good diplomat - instead of speaking softly and carrying a big stick- I speak loudly and carry a fountain pen. Even after Dissertation Camp ends, I will continue to make a list of goals before I launch into the day's writing. So thank you!!

Day 5: Cabin Itsgettinghotinhere
Day 5:
Ooofta, isn't it hot out there today- at least for me. As the humidity increases so does my sluggishness when having to go outdoors during the daylight... that kind of sounds like a vampire, ooooooooo. Anyways, I bet the heat is what is contributing to my super early bedtimes this past week. I was only able to make it to 9:15 until I turned off all the machines for the night.
So today's goals:
"Week of Soviet Cinema in France 1955"
write: most if not all of the entire section
research: I don't have as much info as I thought, I think I will need to review more newspapers/journals/etc to bring out more of the public opinion and stereotypes about Soviet cinema. For this I will see what I can access from this chair in the EPB via the internet, otherwise I may have to pop over to the library for some of these 4 hours, but I'd rather use this time to write.
Let us go!
______________________
DID:
Well I cannot access articles from 1955 online I guess I will have to come back to this part of the "Week of Soviet Cinema" section once I have more research. In this case, because I was just awarded a small grant to go back to France for wrap up research, the most time efficient way to obtain public and film critic reaction to the Soviet films and the new image of Soviet cinema information is actually to go back to this one archive (the Film Library in Paris - Bibliotheque du film, otherwise known as BiFi) which has all the newspaper clippings about the films shown during the Week of Soviet Cinema- otherwise I would have to order all the microfilm through ILL (the best program ever) and comb through 20+ different French newspapers and film journals praying I stumble upon an article--- so I will save the reaction section of this section, hehe, for after I go back to France for the 3rd time for this one particular project.
ACTUALLY DID:
I was so drained from the heat and work from the week, me, my typing fingers and my brain moved at a very sluggish pace from 9-1- like a sloth eating a slug while being a sleuth. But I did manage to eek out the entire section- but I DO NOT LIKE THE SECTION, and compared to the analysis for the "Week of French Cinema in the USSR" it is rather lackluster- but at least it is out of my brain and on paper!!!!!!
WEEKEND GOALS:
Research, research, research so that I am prepared to write from 9-1 all next week

Day 4: Cabin Fever
So I found it helpful stating my writing goals for the day before I begin writing, so here I am doing it again. So I actually didn't get to one of my goal items yesturday, but didn't notice.
So today's goals are:
"Week of French Cinema in the USSR 1955"
- write: French have hope for Soviet cinema
"Week of Soviet Cinema in France 1955"
- Research: Review and/or read the documents/notes
- Organization: structure of the section + arrange evidence in order of discussion
That's enough already!
Like Rebecca said the first or second day- it takes time to build up to the 4+ hours of writing a day. For me, however, the 4+ hours of writing goes fast and fine, what I have to build up is bedtime. The first day I could seriously only make it to 7:30pm before I had to go to sleep. The 2nd day I was able to make it to 8:30pm, and on the 3rd night (last night) I made it until 9:15pm. Some day soon I may just be able to make it to normal people adult bed time.
_____________
So what did I end up doing despite my antsy-pants? Not everything I said I would and things I didn't even address-- I found the best place for some of my bits of evidence that I know is super important, I just wasn't sure in which discussion I wanted to include them. I decided my "the French have hope for Soviet cinema" section was out of place in the "Week of French Cinema" section, and will now incorporate it into my "Week of Soviet Cinema" section, where I think it will fit better.... so I didn't write this section, hehe, a bit of a cheat. I finished up some loose ends in what I have written so far. Then I moved on to my research. I was able to read through 90% the research for "Week of Soviet Cinema in France 1955." I hope to finish reading the rest tonight and organize the structure of the section tonight or tomorrow morning- but BEFORE the boot camp at 9am.

Day 3: Cabin Gonnadoodis
Taking others' cues- I'm going to begin the day by posting my goals and see if that helps me keep more on track, though I do not feel I have had any problems staying on track while in this very room.
Day 3 goals:
Finish writing:
"Week of French Cinema in the USSR: 1955" section
- Results of Semaine: hope for future
- Fr films on Soviet market given Soviet audience-press reaction to Fr films
- beginning of actual film exchange
- improve cultural and political relations
Transition to next section: hope for Soviet Cinema
Voila! I have all my pieces of evidence layed out in the order in which I want to discuss them; so I am hoping today will be filling in the spaces between the evidence with my what-must-be-fabulous analysis.
________
Did I doodis?
Well I actually got through this all!!! Made 2 single spaced pages out of it. However, in the long run if I treat everything in such detail I will have a 1000 page dissertation, so much of this will be edited down in the future, but I got to get the thoughts out, right!?!

Day 2: Cabin Wannahockaloogie
I didn't really have a goal today besides get some writing done. What I ended up doing was finish editing, adding to and re-organizing what I had written a year ago, and now it makes sense for where I want to take this section. I am excited to start a new topic for this section tomorrow, but tonight I will have to prepare my notes for the new topic. I didn't have as much momentum today as I did yesterday, but any progress is progress and I am proud of what I did. Re-organization is hard, ugh. I've been writing about an event in 1955 but it also happened every 2 years until 1972, so my goal for the week will be to finish my detailed account of the 1955 event, and then begin my section on the rest of the years, which will be more of an exploration of major reoccurring themes rather than a detailed examination of each year, as I have done for 1955.

Day 1: Cabin Chipmunk: 6/1/15
Well it has been about a year since I was really last wrote the section I am currently working on. So the goals I set for myself at 9am were to read through what I had written for this section so far and get my thoughts back onto the same path I was following when I began writing this section a year ago. After that I planned to continue writing where I had left off. Well, those were the plans. First I should explain a little bit of my writing process for your understanding. As I write, if I do not know how I want to perfectly express my thought or if I am having troubles working out an idea I write in bold so I know to come back to it later to edit. So, this morning at 9am, as I started to read what I had written, I stumbled upon a section of notes/writing in bold that I absolutely know I had turned into prose and had un-bolded. So I had to re-write 5 paragraphs I had already written a year ago in order to get to where I wanted to start today at 9am. After re-writing those darn 5 paragraphs, I was able to read through what I had written a year ago and get my thoughts back on the same path while editing the crappy quality of writing I had written a year ago. After that I was able to write an additional 2 paragraphs. Now I am left with figuring out the order of what I am going to write next. My process for this is to go through my notes and copy and paste them into my working draft in the order in which I want to discuss them or use them as evidence. This I will do at home tonight so that I can spend as much time in this room as possible clacking away at the keyboard.
